Wanted to share this update about a protest happening tomorrow at Duke Energy HQ.
Today the Dan River in NC is running grey and black after a massive coal ash spill began Sunday at Duke Energy’s retired Dan River coal plant.
Coal ash typically contains toxic chemicals such as arsenic, lead and mercury, and about 82,000 tons of coal ash and some 27 million gallons of coal ash-contaminated water have poured into the neighboring Dan River. The spill threatens communities that use the river for drinking water, and Duke still has yet to stop the leak.
Join concerned Charlotte residents tomorrow for a protest outside Duke Energy HQ.
WHAT: Community rally to demand duke clean up its coal ash dumps
WHEN: Thursday, February 6, 2014, 12:00 PM
WHERE: Duke Energy Headquarters, in front of building
550 South Tryon St, Charlotte NC 28202
The same risk currently threatens Charlotte’s drinking water supply at Mountain Island Lake, where Duke Energy has two unlined and coal ash lagoons designated as “high hazard” by the EPA. We must make sure to hold Duke accountable to clean up the spill at Dan River and all the other coal ash ponds across the state. Join us and make your voice heard.
